Privacy Policy
Memoir records people telling the stories of their lives, often late in life, in their own voices. That is some of the most personal information anyone can share, and this policy explains plainly what we collect, why, who helps us process it, and the choices you have.
This policy is issued by Memoir Audio, Inc., a Delaware corporation ("Memoir," "we," "us"), which is responsible for the personal information described here. It covers memoir.audio, the Memoir app and recording experience, the family listening page, and purchases made directly or through our partners. It should be read together with our Terms of Use, which define the "account holder" (the adult who buys or sets up a memoir) and the "storyteller" (the person whose story is recorded).
1. Information we collect
From account holders and buyers. Name, email address, phone number, and billing or shipping details; the storyteller's name and the background you share during setup (such as where they grew up, where they live now, family names, topics to cover or avoid, and your choice of biographer); photos you upload; and your messages to us. If you buy through a partner, the partner sends us the details needed to deliver your memoir, such as your name, email, and phone number. Card payments are handled by the payment processor or partner; we do not receive full card numbers.
From storytellers. Audio recordings of interview sessions, which contain the storyteller's voice and everything they say; transcripts of those recordings; and the finished memoir. Recordings may also capture other people who join or are mentioned.
Sensitive information. We do not ask for medical information. But the nature of the Service means recordings and setup details may reveal sensitive information, including health information (for example, that a storyteller has dementia, or details of an illness they talk about), religious beliefs, family relationships, and events from the storyteller's life. We treat all recordings and transcripts as sensitive and use them only to provide the Service.
From waitlist sign-ups and site visitors. Name and email if you join the waitlist or contact us, and basic technical and usage data such as browser type, device, pages viewed, and approximate location, collected through cookies and similar technologies.
2. How we use information
- To conduct interviews, including tailoring the biographer's questions and pace to the storyteller.
- To transcribe, edit, and produce the memoir, and to deliver and share it with the people the account holder chooses.
- To communicate with you about your memoir, respond to requests, and provide support.
- To process payments, refunds, and partner orders.
- To keep the Service secure, prevent misuse, and meet legal obligations.
- To operate and improve the site and app, using usage data and aggregated information that does not identify anyone.
- With your permission, to send product news. You can unsubscribe at any time.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use recordings, transcripts, or memoirs for advertising. We do not create a synthetic copy of a storyteller's voice without separate, explicit consent.
Where the law requires a legal basis (for example, in the EU or UK), we rely on performing our contract with you, consent (including explicit consent for sensitive information, which may be given by an authorized representative where the law allows), our legitimate interests in running a safe and reliable service, and compliance with law.
3. Who can see your information
People at Memoir. Members of our production team listen to recordings and read transcripts in order to edit and produce memoirs. Access is limited to people who need it for that work and who are bound by confidentiality.
Service providers. We use trusted providers to run the Service. They process information only on our instructions and may not use it for their own purposes. They currently include providers of:
- conversational voice AI and speech processing (ElevenLabs);
- AI language models used to run and prepare interviews and transcripts (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini);
- cloud hosting, databases, and file storage (Supabase, Amazon Web Services, Netlify);
- email, forms, and communications (Google Workspace, Formspree);
- place-name lookup during setup (Photon, an OpenStreetMap-based service, which receives only the place name you type);
- payment processing and, where applicable, shipping.
Partners. If you bought through a partner, we share with that partner only what is needed to confirm, support, or refund the purchase. Partners do not receive recordings or memoirs.
People you share with. The family listening page is shared by private link. Anyone who has the link can listen, so share it only with people you trust, and contact us if you need a new link.
Legal and business reasons. We may disclose information when required by law or to protect someone's safety or our rights, and to a successor if Memoir is acquired or reorganized, in which case this policy will continue to protect it.
4. International transfers
Memoir is based in the United States, and our service providers process information in the United States and other countries. If you live elsewhere, including Israel, the EU, or the UK, your information will be transferred to and processed in countries whose laws may differ from yours. Where the law requires it, we use appropriate safeguards for these transfers, such as contractual commitments from our providers.
5. How long we keep information
- Recordings, transcripts, and memoirs: for as long as the account holder wants the memoir kept, since preserving it is the point of the Service, or until deletion is requested.
- Purchase and billing records: for as long as tax and accounting laws require.
- Waitlist information: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
When a recording or memoir is deleted, we delete it within 30 days from our own storage and databases, from our production team's working files, and from any service provider that still holds a copy on our behalf. Some providers keep limited logs for a short period under their own terms, for example to detect abuse, and delete them on their own schedule. Copies in our backups are removed as those backups expire.
6. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and limiting access to people who need it. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you and the authorities as the law requires.
7. Your rights and choices
You can ask to access, correct, download, or delete your personal information, or to stop recording, by emailing hello@memoir.audio. A storyteller, or their authorized representative, can make these requests about the storyteller's own recordings. We may need to verify your identity or authority first, and we will respond within the time the law requires.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights:
- Israel: rights under the Protection of Privacy Law, 5741-1981, and its regulations, including the right to review your information and to request that it be corrected or deleted.
- EEA and UK: rights under the GDPR and UK GDPR, including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, and withdrawing consent at any time.
- California and other U.S. states: rights to know, access, correct, and delete personal information, to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined, and we use sensitive information only to provide the Service.
You can also complain to your local data protection authority, such as the Israeli Privacy Protection Authority. We would appreciate the chance to address your concern first.
8. Children
Memoir is not directed to children, and only adults can buy or set up a memoir. Children's voices may occasionally be captured if they join a session; the account holder is responsible for a parent or guardian's permission, and we will delete a child's recording on request.
9. Cookies
Our site uses cookies and similar technologies that are needed for it to work, and limited analytics to understand how the site is used. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
10. Changes to this policy
We will update the "Last updated" date when we change this policy. For material changes, especially any change in how we use recordings, we will notify account holders by email before the change takes effect and, where required, ask for consent.
